Frequently asked questions
Your answer may already be here.
How do you check an email address?
In real time, in a few seconds: the format, the domain and the mailbox itself. Each address is also flagged when it is disposable, a role address (info@, support@…), on a free provider or on a domain that accepts any address. You get a clear answer with the reason behind it.
What do the results mean?
Deliverable: the mailbox exists and accepts email. Undeliverable: the address is malformed, its domain cannot receive email, or the mailbox does not exist. Risky: the domain accepts any address (catch-all) or the address is disposable, so send with care. Unknown: no definite answer this time.
Why is an address reported as catch-all?
Some domains accept every address, real or not, and sort them out later. Their mailboxes cannot be confirmed, so we report them as risky rather than deliverable: an honest answer instead of a false promise. Yahoo and AOL, for instance, accept every address.
Why do I get unknown results, and what should I do?
Some email providers answer slowly or ask to come back later. An unknown result says nothing about the mailbox: retry later rather than removing the address. In a list, unknown results are checked again automatically, and you can retry them once more for free from the page of the list.
Can I check a whole list?
Yes: upload a CSV, Excel (XLSX) or text file from your dashboard. Duplicates are checked once, and you get your file back with the results added as new columns. With the API, you can send up to 100,000 addresses at once.
Is there an API?
Yes, to check one address or a whole list. ValidEmail also works with Make and Zapier.
Read the API documentationWhat happens to the addresses I check?
They are checked live, never compared with a database of collected emails, and never shared or resold. Results and logs are deleted after 30 days.
Can a deliverable address still bounce?
Rarely: a mailbox can fill up, be disabled or be deleted after the check, and a few providers accept an address and reject the email later. Check your list shortly before sending.
